Position Details

The DuPage State's Attorney's Office is seeking an Investigator for the Children's Advocacy Center located in Wheaton, Illinois.

The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Experienced certified police officer (with a minimum of 3 years experience)
  • Background in criminal investigations
  • This position will require specialized training for working with cases involving child physical and sexual victimization
  • This position requires a rotating On Call responsibility 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION:

  • An employee in this class is responsible for investigating and interviewing witnesses and alleged offenders.
  • Work involves the ability to work cooperatively with multiple law enforcement agencies while investigating assigned cases.
  • This position is distinguished by the requirement that the incumbent be a sworn officer with the accountability to carry a weapon and have the authority to make arrests.
  • Direction is received from the Director and Deputy Directors of the DuPage Children's Advocacy Center.
  • An employee in this class will be enrolled in Child First training in forensic interviewing and must successfully complete the program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only, and is not a comprehensive listing of all the duties and responsibilities performed by positions in this class.

  • Interviews and/or interrogates alleged victims and offenders using diverse questioning techniques
  • Makes assessments of the psychological and emotional status of the person being interviewed
  • Locates and interviews witnesses for and/or against the accused
  • Travels throughout the region to investigate cases
  • Accumulates documentary evidence and investigates leads
  • Obtains confessions and makes arrests
  • Participates in surveillance
  • Completes search and seizure of property
  • Takes photographs, makes tape recordings and compiles other forms of documentation and evidence
  • Testifies in court as required
  • Transports witnesses, defendants and evidence to and from court proceedings as directed by attorneys
  • Prepares detailed reports documenting interviews and all other applicable aspects of the investigation
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Completes required training programs and stays current with County Emergency Management operational policies and procedures.
  • Maintains 24/7 availability to respond to emergencies, exercises and other related activities.
  • Adjusts work assignment or schedule in the event of an emergency to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities as assigned.
  • Depending on assignment, may require emergency management training, licensure or certifications.

Knowledge of:

  • The practices, procedures and techniques employed in criminal investigation
  • Laws and ordinances relating to arrest or search and seizure
  • General procedures used in criminal investigation and by courts conducting criminal trials
  • Geography of DuPage County
  • Current office practices, procedures, and equipment
  • County policies and procedures
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, codes, and/or statutes

Skill in:

  • Applying investigative methods, techniques, and practices in conducting investigations to secure witnesses, facts, and evidence
  • Assisting in the preparation of cases for court or grand jury hearings
  • Gathering a variety of information through questioning and interrogation techniques
  • Preparing clear and concise reports and documentation
  • Using computer hardware and software including work processing, spreadsheets, databases, email, etc.
  • Applying an acquired knowledge of procedures, rules, regulations, and services of office to which assigned

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, three years of experience in law enforcement or criminal justice and completion of the police academy training.
  • Depending on area of assignment, position may require specialized training for working with cases involving child victimization; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
