Position Details

The Riverdale Police Department is seeking qualified, motivated candidates for the position of Community Service Officer (CSO).

This civilian role supports the Police and Fire Departments by performing a wide range of non-emergency, non-sworn duties. The CSO enhances public safety, enforces local ordinances, and engages directly with the community to improve the overall quality of life in the Village of Riverdale.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist police and fire personnel with logistics and non-emergency duties
• Issue parking citations and enforce parking ordinances
• Identify, report, and coordinate removal of abandoned vehicles
• Conduct proactive patrols to monitor abandoned or derelict properties
• Document and report code violations (e.g., structural hazards, property neglect)
• Support fire scenes with traffic or crowd control as needed
• Respond to citizen service requests that do not require sworn officers
• Assist with traffic control at accidents, public events, and emergencies
• Maintain accurate records and complete necessary reports
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of public safety 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Experience in code enforcement, public safety, or municipal services preferred 

Licensing & Requirements:

• Valid Illinois driver's license and safe driving record
• Must pass pre-employment drug screening
• No felony convictions or convictions involving moral turpitude 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong communication and observational skills
• Ability to interact professionally with the public
• Familiarity with municipal codes, ordinances, and safety regulations
• Basic computer skills and report writing proficiency
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment 

Work Environment:

• Work performed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather
• May involve extended periods of walking, standing, or driving
• May require availability during nights, weekends, holidays, or emergencies
