The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners for the City of St. Charles is now accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Police Officer.
Testing is being conducted for multiple new hires and for anticipated hiring in the near future.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Citizenship: Applicants for examination for Police Officer must be a citizen of the United States. An individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law or is an individual against whom immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) process is authorized to apply for the position of police officer, subject to (i) all requirements and limitations, other than citizenship, to which other applicants are subject and (ii) the individual being authorized under federal law to obtain, carry, or purchase or otherwise possess a firearm.
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must have attained their 21st birthday by the last date for filing applications (9/24/25). Applicants must be under the age of 35 years on 9/24/2025 and at such time as the final eligibility list is posted, unless exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10 – 2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a certified full-time police officer in a regularly constituted police department for a municipality in the United States.
- Education: Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
- Residence: Must reside within a 40-mile radius of the St. Charles intersection of Riverside Avenue and East Main Street within the 18-month probationary date of hire.
- Language: Must be able to comprehend the English language, both spoken and written.
- Character: Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6. Applicants who have been disqualified from an existing St. Charles eligibility list shall be disqualified for any consideration. Applicants who have been previously disqualified for employment with the City of St. Charles due to the failure of a polygraph exam, the failure of a police background investigation, the failure of a psychological examination, or the failure of a medical exam which includes a drug test, shall be disqualified for any future consideration.
- Eyesight and Hearing: Both shall be consistent with a level necessary to perform the duties of the position.
- POWER Card: Candidates must possess a valid POWER Card issued between the dates of 9/24/24 and 9/24/25 issued by a certified testing agency.
- Testing: Must be able to participate and successfully complete all phases of the testing.

There is a $20.00 fee for the application (refunded on first paycheck if hired).
Applications are non-refundable and NOT available at the St. Charles Police Department or City Hall.
All applications are subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.
Applicants must be present for and pass the following initial phases:
- Provide a valid POWER Card issued by a certified testing agency between September 24, 2024 and September 24, 2025.
- Mandatory orientation and written examination will be offered on two dates (selection at time of application):
- Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 6:30 pm
- Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 8:30 am
- Oral interview dates will be selected in November 2025.

The scores of the written test and the oral examination are computed, and an Initial Eligibility Register is developed. Following the application of preference points, a Final Eligibility Register will be completed by December 2025.
A background investigation, to include a polygraph, will be conducted when a vacancy occurs. Upon successful completion of the background investigation, a conditional offer of employment is made. This offer is contingent on passing a psychological, drug screen, medical, and functional capacity evaluation.
