Police Officer Application
Hawthorn Woods is known for its beautiful neighborhoods, great school districts, open spaces, natural resource friendly parks and recreation areas. We are an upscale, friendly community that is an oasis from the suburban pace. We love our town with its rural atmosphere located only 40 miles from downtown Chicago.
Minimum Requirements:
- $40.00 non-refundable application fee. Bring a check on the day of the exam payable to the Village of Hawthorn Woods.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
- Must be at least 21 years at the time of application. Must be under 35 years old at the time of application, unless they have been certified as a full-time police officer in the United States, or are otherwise exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6.
- Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
- Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6.
- Must have proof of a High School Diploma, GED Certificate, or High School Proficiency Statement.
- Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6.
- Must be able to complete all phases of testing successfully.
Requirements for Lateral Applicants:
Lateral entry to the police department shall be open to any full-time police officer who is employed by any municipal, township, county, parish, university, state, commonwealth, federal, or regularly constituted law enforcement agency. In addition to the requirements set in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.16.
Applicants must:
- Provide documentation of continuous service as a police officer for a minimum of two years, and
- Be in good standing in the police department in which the person currently serves, and
- If currently serving as a police officer within the State of Illinois, certification from the Illinois Training and Standards Board as a certified full-time police officer, or
- If currently serving as a police officer outside the State of Illinois, be eligible to be granted a waiver of basic training from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
Orientation and Testing Information:
New officer candidates (not lateral applicants) must attend the mandatory orientation and written examination on:

Please arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. with a photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, military ID) to sign-in.

Additional details and guidelines will be provided approximately one week before the exam.
The Initial Eligibility Register is subject to change with the addition of the Veterans, Educational or Law Enforcement Certification Preference Points as prescribed in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-8 and 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-9. Preference points will be as stated and not cumulative.
