Position Details

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners for the Village of Bellwood is now accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Police Officer.

Testing is being conducted for multiple hiring needs and to establish an Eligibility List for future hiring needs.

The Bellwood Police Department’s mission is to promote, preserve, and deliver a sense of security, safety, and quality services to all members of the community and those who pass within their borders.  The Police Department is divided into four divisions:  Operations/Patrol, Investigative, Service, and Community Policing.  The Police Department offers stable leadership and growth opportunities with the Chief of Police at the Department for 35 years and in the Chief position for 11 years.  The Police Department is very diverse.

The Village of Bellwood offers both residents and visitors an excellent infrastructure, a low crime rate, and easy access via highways, streets, and public transportation to one of the nation’s most thriving metropolitan areas.  Among its many other attributes, this close-knit community has a long tradition of collaborating and networking to develop and execute special events, programs, and initiatives that make Bellwood a great place to be just outside of Chicago.

You must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Citizenship:  Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Driver’s License:  Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
• Age Requirement:  Applicants must have attained their 21st birthday by the last date for filing applications (10/8/25). Must be under the age of 35 years on 10/8/25 and when the final eligibility register is posted unless exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10 – 2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed as a certified full-time Police Officer for a municipality in the U.S.
• Education:  Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
• Character:  Must not have committed any felony, certain misdemeanors, or crime involving moral turpitude and be of good moral character pursuant to 50 ILCS 705/6.
• Residence:  At time of hire, must reside within the state of Illinois.
