The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the City of Joliet, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of Certified Police Officer with the Joliet Police Department.
The Joliet Police Department is seeking dedicated individuals who want to make a positive impact in their community. To be considered eligible, an applicant must meet the minimum requirement of two (2) years as a full-time sworn law enforcement officer with their respective law enforcement agency. Applicants are required to complete a written and an oral assessment to establish a numerical ranking list.

THE CITY OF JOLIET HAS A RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT IN PLACE:
All new employees must reside within the corporate limits of the City of Joliet or within 50 miles of the intersection of Essington Road and Jefferson Street within 18 months of the date of hire.
All Certified Lateral Transfer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the City of Joliet:
- All applicants for examination must be citizens of the United States and/or permanent residents.
- You must possess a valid state-issued driver's license with good driving record (this will be required as proof of ID at all stages).
- High school graduate -OR- GED equivalent.
- All applicants must provide proof of completion of the P.O.W.E.R. test administered by NIPSTA, Triton College, or Joliet Junior College prior to the posting of the Final Eligibility Register.
- Proof of the POWER test may be provided during the initial application process but must be submitted no later than the Final Eligibility Register list posting. To be considered valid, a POWER test card must be dated within 12 months of the written examination date (November 15, 2025). Failure by any applicant to complete or pass any tests according to BOFPC shall be eliminated from further consideration.
- Only P.O.W.E.R. Test administered by NIPSTA, Triton College, or Joliet Junior College will be accepted:
- All applicants must have completed the minimum standard basic law enforcement course required by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board or is eligible to receive certification through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board if certified as a full-time police officer in another state. A certificate must be submitted during the application process.
- Must have been previously or is currently employed as a sworn full-time officer with a Police Department in any municipality, county, University, or State Law Enforcement agency for at least two years.
- Must have completed their probationary period and are/were in good standing with their agency.
- All Certified Lateral Transfer Police Applicants shall be under 39 years of age to be appointed. If the applicant becomes over age during the application process or while on the Lateral Transfer List, they shall not be allowed to continue with the application process, not be appointed, and their name shall be immediately stricken from the list.
- No felony convictions or any misdemeanors involving moral turpitude.
- Registered with the Selective Services System.
- Must have 20/20 vision (or corrected 20/20 vision) -AND- cannot be color blind.
- Must meet all requirements, including a thorough background investigation, and successfully pass a psychological test, polygraph, medical, vision, and drug testing.
- Must complete the department Field Training Program. The probationary period for all police officers shall be a period of eighteen (18) months from the date of hire.
- All applicants must successfully complete an written examination on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Candidates scoring in the top tier will progress to the oral board interview.
- Pay a $25.00 non-refundable application processing fee.
