The Winthrop Harbor Police Department is hiring for the position of Police Officer.

Department Overview:

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department is looking for exceptional candidates interested in joining the ranks of the Winthrop Harbor Police Department as a full-time police officer. Job Requirements:

• Minimum of 21-35 years of age unless exempt under 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6
• U.S. Citizenship or legally authorized to work in the United States
• Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
• Valid ILLINOIS Driver's License
• Ability to Read/Speak English
• No felony convictions Applicant with a record of misdemeanor convictions may be disqualified from taking examination as set forth in 65 ILCS 5/10-1-7(c).
• Vision correctable to 20/20; possess normal peripheral vision; ability to see in color
• Must satisfy the physical fitness requirements of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation (POWER) Test (issued during the previous 12 months).

• A copy of your Birth Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization
• A copy of your High School Diploma or GED Certificate
• A copy of college degree, if applicable
• A copy of your Driver's License
• A copy of your U.S. Military DD-214 form, if applicable
• If applicable, a copy of your certificate of completion of Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy Training or comparable training from another state
• A copy of the document confirming you passed the POWER test on or after October 14, 2024

Candidates must complete the necessary Public Safety Self-Assessment as well as the Frontline National exam through NTN.

Applications and required documentation must be received by 5:00 pm on Monday, November 3, 2025. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Preference Points:

VETERAN'S POINTS:

Applicants who were engaged in the military or naval service of the United States for a period of at least one year and who were honorably discharged there from, or who are not on may thereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service (not including, however, in the case of offices, positions and places of employment in the police department, persons who were convicted by court-martial of disobedience of orders, where such disobedience consisted in the refusal to perform military service on the ground of religious or conscientious objections against war) shall receive five (5) points. Proof of such service must include a copy of Military Form DD-214 (long form) as proof of active service, evidence of the honorable discharge, and sworn affidavit by the applicant.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE PREFERENCE POINTS:

Applicants who have successfully obtained an associate's degree in the field of law enforcement, criminal justice, or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college shall receive five (5) points provided that the applicant has not received Veteran's preference points. A certified transcript must be included with the request for preference points as proof of the attainment of a degree. (Veterans and education preference points shall not be cumulative)

Power Test:

The Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board established the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) Test as a physical assessment tool for entry to Illinois police academies. The test was created in recognition of the importance of physical fitness in the performance of essential law enforcement duties. The test requires police officer candidates to engage in the following activities:

• Sit and Reach Test
• One Repetition Maximum Bench Press
• One Minute Sit-Up Test
• 1.5 Mile Run 

The test is graded on a pass/fail basis. Applicants must complete all four exercises to pass the test.
