Position Details

The City of Springfield is seeking individuals to participate in the Police Patrol Officer Lateral examination process, which will begin December 4, 2019.

Duties of a sworn officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Routine patrol
  • Preliminary investigations
  • Suspect apprehension and arrest
  • Initial processing of evidence and property 

Eligibility requirements for Police Patrol Officer Lateral are:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • High school graduate or GED
  • Uncorrected visual sharpness minimum 20/40, normal or mild color; blindness or mild anomalous trichromat (red-green deficiency)
  • Ability to meet and comply with the department’s tattoo policy
  • No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors
  • Ability to pass all required phases of the examination
  • A valid FOID card and Illinois driver’s license at time of hire 
  • Must have graduated from a full-time certified police academy
  • Been employed a minimum of three (3) of the past five (5) years as a full-time police officer in a single jurisdiction in which the training and experience qualifies or would qualify the officer to become certified in the State of Illinois
  • A candidate must have obtained three years of service by the date of the written exam
  • At the time of application, a candidate must provide certification of successful completion from a full-time certified police academy and a letter indicating employment dates as a police officer on the police department’s letterhead
  • The maximum age to take the written examination is 34 unless the individual meets one of the following exemptions under the Illinois Compiled State Statute: 1) Previous employment as a police officer or firefighter in the regularly constituted police or fire department of the municipality (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-7). “The municipality” is defined as the City of Springfield; or 2) Active duty service in the military (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-12)
