Position Details
We are looking for 2-3 Part-Time Officers to join our team.
The Crete Police Department is made up of (1) Chief of Police, (1) Deputy Chief, (1) Records Supervisor, (1) Police Administrator, (4) Sergeants, (2) detectives, (1) School Resource Officer, (12) patrol officers, (1) PT Officer, (2) PT Auxiliary Officers, and (6) crossing guards.
The Village of Crete, located in Will County, Illinois has approximately 9,000 residents and is 9.6 square miles in size. It is a far south suburb of Chicago, 30 miles from the Loop and only 6 miles from the Indiana border. The Crete Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to maintain law and order, health, safety and morals, preserving the peace, protecting life and property and by interceding to bring lawbreakers to justice.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 21 years of age or above
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate
- Possess a valid Illinois driver's license
- Possess a valid Illinois FOID card (unless an Indiana resident and exempt by law)
- Must have graduated from either an Illinois full-time police academy or an Illinois part-time academy approved by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) in conjunction with the Illinois Police Training Act.
- Must be currently employed with an Illinois Law Enforcement Agency or separated/resigned/retired in good standing. Inactive law enforcement applicants may be required to successfully complete an ILETSB-approved law refresher course-as mandated by ILETSB.
- Must have served as a certified Fulltime or Part time Illinois police officer for at least (1) year at the same agency
- Qualified in the use of firearms-able to be proficient and pass department standard qualifications
- Ability to be certified in CPR/AED and First Aid
- Must have a clear record with no arrests involving violent crimes and or felonies, or crimes or behavior of poor character or unethical actions.
- Pass a background investigation and oral interview
- Sealed files, non-disclosure orders or agreements with past or present employers, will result in insufficient background checks, and disqualify candidates from employment consideration
- Pass a medical examination and drug test (prohibited from using recreational cannabis while employed by the police department)
- **May be subject to a polygraph and/or physical fitness test-if determined by Chief of Police
- Anyone who has served in the US Military must have been honorably discharged
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Able to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions
- Exercise initiative and discretion in emergency situations
- Make decisions based upon department policies and training
- Have good communication skills
- Ability to become proficient with required software and computer-based systems
- Work without direct supervision
- Must have a working knowledge and / or the ability to access information in criminal and traffic law, and department policy
- Be of good moral character, ethical standards, of temperate habits on and off duty.
- Sound health, and physically and mentally able to perform assigned duties
- Attend training as required
- Establish positive relationships with the community
- Successful completion of accelerated field training program
- Work a minimum of (30) hours each month-unless specifically excused or exempt by Chief of Police –on a monthly basis
Some of the Essential Job Functions of this role:
- Patrol & Public Safety: Support the full-time patrol force by monitoring residential, commercial, and industrial areas to deter and respond to unlawful activity.
- Emergency Response: Respond to calls for service, including accidents, crimes in progress, and citizen assistance; secure scenes, provide first aid, and coordinate with medical or emergency personnel.
- Law Enforcement Duties: Enforce traffic and parking regulations, conduct investigations, collect evidence, serve warrants, and assist with arrests, booking, and prisoner transport.
- Community Engagement: Promote traffic safety, provide crowd control at community events, and maintain positive relationships with residents to support public trust.
- Training & Professional Standards: Participate in required firearms qualifications, ongoing training, and safety procedures to ensure compliance with state and departmental standards.
