You must further meet the following minimum requirements:
- Possess a full-time Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board ("ILETSB") police officer certification;
- Have previously been a full-time sworn officer of a regular police department in any municipal, county, or State law enforcement agency;
- Have been with his or her respective law enforcement agency within the State for at least two (2) years;
- Be at least 23 years old and a U.S. citizen at the time of appointment;
- Possess a valid Class "D" Illinois driver's license in good standing or a valid out-of-state driver's license of similar classification in good standing;
- Have no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude, be of excellent moral character, and not be under investigation by your current department as described in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6; and
- Have proof of High School Diploma or GED Certificate AND completed 60 college credit hours from an accredited college or university at the time of application, or must have served 24 months of active duty or 180 days of combat duty in the United States Armed Forces as designated by the Department of Defense, and have not been discharged under circumstances other than honorable.
In addition, as with candidates for appointment under the rules of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, candidates being considered for lateral appointment shall be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- The results of a thorough background investigation;
- The results of an oral interview and examination;
- The results of a physical examination;
- The results of a medical evaluation, including a psychological assessment and drug screening;
- The results of a polygraph examination; and
- Must be under the age of 36 years old at the time of placement on the eligibility list for lateral appointment. The age limit in this Section does not apply if the candidate (a) was previously employed as a police officer in a municipality and is under age 40 at the time of application; (b) served as an auxiliary police officer for at least five (5) years and is under age 40 at the time of application; (c) served as a sheriff’s deputy and meets the applicable training requirements and is under age 40 at time of application; or (d) served as a sworn officer of the Illinois State Police and is under age 40 at the time of application.
Residence:
Within six months of the completion of the 18-month probationary period, residency must be established within the following borders: East – Lake Michigan, West – IL Route 47, North – Wisconsin border, and South – I-80.
