The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners for the Village of River Grove is now accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Police Officer and Lateral Police Officer.
Testing is being conducted for two (2) new hires and for anticipated hiring in the near future.

The Village of River Grove is thriving! The village expanded its population dramatically in the past few years, adding multiple luxury residences throughout the town. With this expansion comes the need for additional law enforcement professionals. The River Grove Police Department is a diverse group of individuals sworn to protect the livelihood of the equally diverse village. The River Grove Police Department currently has 30 sworn officers, officers are deployed in many positions such as school resource officers, detectives, N.I.P.A.S mobile field force officers, N.I.P.A.S EST, and evidence technicians for example.
River Grove Police Department has achieved “Gold” level recognition for 2020 as part of the Lexipol Connect Customer Recognition Program, which recognizes law enforcement agencies for excellence in policy maintenance and training.

Entry Level Police Officer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Driver’s License: Must possess a valid Driver’s License at the time of application with the ability to obtain an Illinois Driver’s License upon time of hire.
- Age Requirement: Applicants must have attained their 21st birthday by the last date for filing applications (8/5/26) or are 20 years of age and have successfully completed 2 years of law enforcement study at an accredited college or university. Applicants must be under the age of 35 years on 8/5/2026 unless exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10 – 2. 1-6 which provides, in part, that the age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed and certified as a full-time law enforcement officer for a municipality in the United States.
- Education: Must have proof of High School Diploma, GED Certificate or High School Proficiency Statement.
- Residence: At this time the River Grove Police Department does not have a residency requirement.
- Language: Must be able to comprehend and speak the English language, both spoken and written.
- Character: Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character as defined in State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1-6. Must not have committed any felony, certain misdemeanors, or crimes involving moral turpitude and be of good moral character pursuant to 50 ILCS 706/6.
- Eyesight and Hearing: Both shall be consistent with a level necessary to perform the duties of the position.
- POWER Card: Will not be required for testing, but individual must possess one at time of conditional offer of employment.
- Testing: Must be able to participate and successfully complete all phases of the testing.
Lateral Police Officer applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
Requirements for Illinois Peace Officers:
- Successfully completed Basic Police Operations at an Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) certified academy.
- Is certified as a Peace Officer by ILETSB.
- Can show proof that they have passed the Illinois Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) test by time of oral interview.
- Is currently employed, or has been previously employed, in the prior 24 months, as a full time sworn Law Enforcement Officer by any municipal, county, university or state law enforcement agency and has been, or had been, with their respective law enforcement agency within the State for at least 2 years.
- Has/had completed their probationary period with their current/former employer.
- Is in, or was separated in, good standing with the police department in which the applicant serves or served.
- Possesses character requirements as set forth by 65ILCS 5/10-2.1-6
- The age limitation does not apply to any person previously employed and certified as a full-time law enforcement officer for a municipality in the United States.
Requirements for Reciprocity of Out-Of-State Peace Officers:
- Successfully completed a basic law enforcement training course at a POST certified academy with a curriculum deemed equivalent to the Illinois Law Enforcement Basic Training Course, which is currently 560 hours in length.
- Have been employed as a full-time Peace Officer with a law enforcement agency in the state where they were trained for a period of at least two consecutive years.
- Can show proof that they have passed the Illinois Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (POWER) test by time of oral interview
- Is in, or was separated in, good standing with the police department in which the applicant serves or served and possesses character requirements as set forth by 65ILCS 5/10-2.1-6.
- Candidates must not have had a substantial break in service and must meet all pre-employment requirements prior to the reciprocity waiver submission.

There is a $25.00 Application Fee that is non-refundable. Applications are NOT available at the River Grove Police Department or Village Hall.
