The City of Mobile, Alabama, with a diverse population of approximately 200,000, is seeking a candidate for the position of Chief of Police. Mobile is a progressive, All-American City, located on Mobile Bay and 48 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The police department is non-unionized and has a budget of $41.7 million with 504 sworn officers and 251 civilian employees. The department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) - one of only 20% of the country that is accredited.
The candidate should have a proactive and innovative record of leadership, as well as a demonstrated record of success in community-oriented policing programs and a commanding knowledge of them. In addition to having a comprehensive knowledge of effective crime-prevention approaches and strategies, the successful candidate must also have a working knowledge of developing plans and requirements of Homeland Security policy and programs.
The candidate must also possess proven skills in planning, supervision, staff and leadership development, as well as the ability to maintain effective relationships with citizens, staff, city officials and other law enforcement agencies. The Mobile Police Department is technology driven; therefore, the candidate must be computer literate and possess an up-to-date knowledge of the latest technology employed in modern law enforcement. The candidate must have the ability to work within the established personnel system.
