Winnetka Firefighter Minimum Requirements:

• Proof of legal authorization to work in the United States at date of hire;
• Must have passed 21st birthday and, except as otherwise provided by law, be under 35 years of age at date of examination (08/15/2020)*;
• Valid driver’s license;
• High school diploma or equivalent;
• Associate’s degree or at least 60 semester credit hours from an accredited college or university prior to offer of employment. OR Evidence of two (2) years of active naval or military service may be accepted in lieu of 60 college credits;
• Valid certification from the State of Illinois as an Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (IDPH EMT-P) by date of hire;
• Vision correctable to 20/40, normal peripheral vision and able to distinguish colors;
• Residency in Illinois at time of employment.
• Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb Certifications by time of conditional offer of employment.

*the maximum age does not apply to anyone who has previously been employed as a firefighter or who has turned 35 while serving as a member of the Military with honorable service under age 40.

Northbrook Firefighter Minimum Requirements:

• U.S. citizen or meet the requirements of the Illinois Human Rights Act for citizenship status;
• Must have passed 21st birthday and, except as otherwise provided by law, be under 35 years of age at date of examination (08/15/2020)*;
• Valid driver’s license
• High school diploma or equivalent
• One of the following:
• Associate’s degree or at least 60 semester credit hours from an accredited college/university (copy of official certified transcripts due at application deadline); OR
• State of Illinois licensed Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (IDPH EMT-P); OR
• State of Illinois licensed Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (IDPH EMTB) AND Illinois Officer of the State Fire Marshal Firefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter certification;
• Vision correctable to 20/40, normal peripheral vision and able to distinguish colors.
• Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb Certifications by time of conditional offer of employment.

*a person who will reach 21 within six months after the date of the examination is eligible to take the examination, but may not be employed until reaching the age of 21.

Orientation and Testing Information:

Candidates must attend the mandatory orientation and written examination currently scheduled for Saturday, August 15 at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, IL. Due to COVID-19 and Governor Pritzker’s re-opening plan, alternate testing arrangements will be made should an in-person examination not be permitted. Specific testing details will be provided to eligible candidates prior to the exam date. All portions of the testing process are mandatory. Failure to attend and successfully complete any portion of the process will result in elimination from employment consideration.
