Position Details

Description of Primary Purpose:

This is a non-sworn position which performs a variety of community service functions through the enforcement of City ordinances and regulations.

The Community Service Officer provides services in the area of non-strict law enforcement and animal control activities:

• Enforces local city codes, including but not limited to, parking, animal control, nuisance and environmental regulations.
• Provides general public services, including but not limited to, assisting motorists; removal of abandoned vehicles; fill-ins for school crossing guards; vehicle lock-outs; child safety seat inspections and installations; courier duties; finger printing; deployment of traffic calming and data collection devices; reports unsafe or unsanitary conditions within the city and takes action to prevent harm or injury to the public or fellow employees.
• Responds to and investigates calls for service involving animal related issues, takes custody of animals creating a danger or nuisance; sets humane traps; apprehends and impounds stray or biting animals; maintains the City Animal Pound and cares for impounded animals; transfer unclaimed domestic animals to humane adoption facilities; relocates wild animals; prepares animal bite reports as required by State, County, and local law; removes and disposes of dead animals from public property.
• Booking of non-violent arrestees; provides notices for and engages in vehicle immobilization of eligible vehicles; conducts taxi cab inspections and prepares proper documents associated with annual licensing of taxis and drivers; inventorying of property; completion of general reports; evidence processing, photographing, collecting, documenting, packaging and preservation.

Qualification Requirements:

• A High School diploma or GED equivalency is required.
• Previous experience working in a customer service related field is preferred.
• A valid driver's license is required.
• Must be able to obtain Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) less than full access certification during 1-year probationary period.
