Position Details

The City of Springfield is seeking individuals to participate in the Police Patrol Officer Lateral examination process, which will begin January 21, 2021.

Eligibility requirements:

• Must have been employed 18-36 months as a full-time officer and graduated from a full-time certified police academy OR been employed a minimum of three (3) of the past five (5) years as a full-time police officer and graduated from a full-time certified police academy or a part-time certified police academy, with a full-time transition course;
• The individual's training and experience either qualifies or would qualify the officer to become certified in the State of Illinois by written request to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (the required years employed must be obtained by January 21, 2021);
• U.S. citizenship;
• High school graduate or GED;
• Uncorrected visual sharpness minimum 20/40 using a typical Snellen opticon, normal or mild anomalous trichomat (red-green deficiency) color blindness;
• Ability to meet and comply with the department's tattoo policy;
• No felony convictions or certain misdemeanors;
• The ability to pass all required phases of the examination;
• A valid driver's license at time of hire;
• Valid FOID card within 12 months of hire. 

At the time of application, the candidate must provide certification of successful completion of above referenced police academy training and a letter indicating employment dates as a police officer on the police department's letterhead.

The maximum age to take the written examination is 34 unless the individual meets one of the following exemptions under the Illinois Compiled State Statute:

1. Previous employment as a police officer or firefighter in the regularly constituted police or fire department of the municipality (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-7). "The municipality" is defined as the City of Springfield; or
2. Active duty service in the military (65 ILCS 5/Article 10-1-12).
