Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

The Metra Police Department serves and protects commuters using the Metra system and Metra's property. The mission of the Metra Police is to safeguard the lives and property of the people they serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety. Metra Police work to expedite issues with the commuting public and handle vehicle accidents and trespasser incidents on Metra railroad and property. Metra Police actively engage and work with first responders as well as local, state and federal agencies during service disruptions and partner with these agencies on security planning. Their work ensures the safety of Metra's passengers and employees and reduces train delays.

  • Reporting to the Chief of Police or designee, the Police Captain directs all uniform patrol officers and special forces, Detectives, Sergeants and Lieutenants, and oversees proactive policing of criminal activity;
  • Supervises and directs traditional police public safety incident response and assigns all uniformed officers to properly perform these functions;
  • Directs and oversees all required functions of the preliminary investigation process and scene stabilization, including documentation and drafting executive report summaries, where appropriate;
  • Provides testimony and support for court proceedings and liaison with agency representatives and company officials;
  • Develops and maintains information resources;
  • Renders first-aid;
  • Takes appropriate action in the interest of public safety and performs other related duties as required. 

The Police Captain, if so assigned, will supervise work assigned to the Investigative Division and direct the work flow and direction of investigative follow up.

The primary duties include:

  • Oversees the collaborate effort through direct daily interaction as a primary liaison for Metra's law enforcement team and law enforcement officials at all levels of local, county, state, and federal agencies.
  • Directs functions and collaborates to further departmental objectives of effectiveness and compliance, including working with senior officials as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Works closely with department heads within Metra as well as members of the community.
  • Writes thorough and detailed reports.
  • Ensures documentation and to appropriately update key officials with critical and sensitive information key details is complete.
  • Testifies competently in trials and other proceedings.
  • Responsible for oversight of Metra's preliminary law enforcement response into deaths or critical incidents on Metra owned, leased, or controlled properties and equipment.
  • Provides functions and responds to duties, when required, as an on-call 24/7 department representative.
  • Approve time off, coordinate staff schedules, fill vacancies as necessary, and ensure compliance with departmental and company policies and objectives.
  • Decide/implement staffing decisions, performance evaluations, and performance improvement, disciplinary, and/or termination procedures.
  • Make recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluations, disciplinary and/or termination procedures.
  • Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Perform lifesaving procedures, CPR, dragging victims from harms way.
  • Ability to climb aboard train locomotives, rail cars and related railroad equipment while wearing uniformed police equipment.
  • Ability to climb over obstacles such as fences, shrubs, and ditches while wearing uniformed police equipment.
  • Drive a police vehicle under emergency and non-emergency conditions.
  • Be physically able to execute defensive tactic maneuvers, as trained.
  • Fire a weapon on duty with the prescribed degree of accuracy.
  • This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. 


  1. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Law, or Political Science OR in lieu of specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four years as a full-time law enforcement officer.
  2. In addition to #1, must be a certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Illinois and have eight years of full-time law enforcement officer experience which includes five years at the command level (generally equivalent to Lieutenant or higher).
  3. Command level experience is defined as direct supervisory experience that includes tasks such as unit management, complex project management, day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, conflict management, employee performance evaluation, employee disciplinary action, budgeting.
  4. Preferred candidate will have successfully completed an advanced law enforcement management program, such as FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC), or similar.
  5. Advanced law enforcement management training may be submitted for consideration in lieu of command level experience.
  6. Considerable knowledge in obtaining, reviewing, and securing evidence.
  7. Considerable knowledge of methods of criminal investigative procedure, case management, and prosecution procedure.
  8. Considerable knowledge of police emergency response procedures including securing and stabilizing developing or ongoing police emergency situations.
  9. Considerable knowledge and understanding of the rules, regulations, related case law, and uniform police tactics.
  10. Considerable knowledge and understanding of department policies, rules, regulations, and orders.
  11. Knowledge of emergency management and counter-terrorism operations.
  12. Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes, and ordinances.
  13. Strong verbal and written communication skills, to include the ability to make clear presentations and to testify competently in open court or other hearings.
  14. Demonstrated skills in establishing and maintaining satisfactory working relationships and open communication with subordinates, peers, other officials, and the public.
  15. Good leadership skills.
  16. Ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and develop appropriate and effective solutions and alternatives.
  17. Must have integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness.
  18. Ability to represent the Metra Police at community groups, school programs, crime prevention events and/or other events & activities as required by the Chief of Police.
  19. Must be certified as a Police Officer in the State of Illinois, or able to obtain a waiver from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board for out of state training within 90 days of hire.
  20. Certified or able to obtain CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  21. Must be able to meet the annual minimum firearms qualifications as required by Illinois State law within 15 days of hire.
  22. Must successfully complete and pass a comprehensive background check, including fingerprints.
  23. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  24. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  25. Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
  26. Ability to lift and move up to 110 pounds.
  27. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  28. Must be willing to travel within and outside of Metra's 6-county region.
  29. Out of state travel as required to attend meetings, conferences, training.
  30. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
